T-Nation: Chris, what’s your advice for curing the average obese person’s problem?

I managed to get an excellent deal on a new barbell from EBay. £54 for a brand new 7″ olympic bar with proper locking collars and next day delivery (the delivery guy was out of breath when he arrived!). I’m really stoked with it. So now on the weekends I can practice my overhead squats and get a good Crossfit type workout going.

Sadly though I managed to put my back out during a set of deadlifts last week. I did 84kgs and felt great. 94kgs and felt great. Then on 104kgs I came a bit too far forward on my descent and upset my back big time. I had to hurry out of of the gym and home before I seized up completely. After some rest it wasn’t so bad, but on Sunday, after driving to Bluewater, I was in total agony. Each step hurt so much. Emma suggested putting on a heat patch, which we got from Boots and ever since my back has felt brilliant. It hasn’t felt better since I first hurt it over a month ago.

All about the overhead squat…

A new thing I’ve started doing is foam rolling. Where as stretching lengthens the muscles, foam rolling also works on the deep tissue fibers. Basically imagine getting a deep tissue massage every day you want/need one without having to fork out for it.

It does look kind of odd at times and some moves make you look like your humping the damn thing. So to save myself some embarrassment I bought one for home instead. Well worth the £20 it cost me. I always end up feeling a lot better after 5-10 minutes on one, working out all the knots in my muscles.

My new Bedtime Extreme Formula arrived from MyProtein this morning. It’s not the nicest tasting shake ever but if I want to get fit and healthy the sacrifices have to extend past the gym doors. Consistency is the key so I’ve just got to keep it up. So all together daily my suppliments and shakes consist of:

  • Multi-Vitamin with Ginseng and Probiotics
  • Omega 3-6-9 Cap
  • Whey Protein Isolate (NZ)
  • Whey Protein Isolate (EURO, Egg White Powder)
  • Whey Protein Concentrate 75 (NZ)
  • Whey Protein Concentrate 80 (EURO)
  • Maltodextrin
  • Dextrose
  • Taurine
  • Guarana Extract
  • Creatine Monohydrate
  • Fermented L Glutamine.
  • HMB (beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyric acid)

Sometimes when I run out of stuff to read on the Mens Health and T-Nation forums I have a quick flick through the WeightLossResources one in case theres something interesting happening. I can’t begin to describe how much this forum pisses me off. Maybe I keep coming back in the hope that someone will have written something sensible for once but its the same mindless drivel every single fucking time. 99% of the time it’s a women moaning about how they totally pigged out because of something like they broke a nail or someone said something mean at work. So everyone piles on the sympathy and I’m just left thinking “Wait lets face up to the reality of that instead of making her feel alright about it and trying to justify it”. We’re not even talking about eating maybe a Snickers bar or maybe a packet of crisps but some proper BBW pigging out. There are also a lot of posts along the lines of “OMG I had a big dinner last night and this morning I’ve put on 2lbs. I’m not going to eat for a week.” or “I’ve saved up enough calories this week/month/year to eat whatever I like without putting on weight.”.

Maybe it’s just the attitude I picked up from the Mens Health ones in that if you want to look good you’re going to have to work at it and give it 110%. It’s good to eat the things you like sometimes, but gorging yourself is just going to undo all the hard work you’ve put in.

Well I’m hardly one to talk as I’m no where near my goals yet. I measured myself at ~17/18% bodyfat at 189lbs. So I’ve got to drop at least another 14-15lbs of fat before I can start to think about builking.

I made the really really really bad mistake of thinking I was well enough to go to the gym this morning. I mulled it over while standing at the door ready to leave but decided that if I was sick I could just stop.

I started off on the rowing machine and felt pretty much fine, so I carried on for about 15 minutes before moving onto another machine. Thats when I suddenly started feeling really really sick. I just couldn’t focus on anything and the whole room was spinning so fast. The gym wasn’t that full so I plonked myself on one of the machines and just sat there waiting for the dizziness to pass, but after about a minute I started feeling nauseous. I made my way back to the changing room and I honestly thought I was either going to pass out or puke in the middle of the hall.

It took a good 15 minutes of sitting with my head in my hands before I started feeling well enough to have a shower and make my way to work. I wish I had just stayed in bed this morning. I think I’ll pass on the gym for a few more days yet.

The moral of this story is if you have to think about whether your well enough to go to the gym then you probably aren’t. Getting better is every much a part of living a healthy lifestyle as is going to the gym. So don’t risk putting your training even further back by jumping the “feeling better” gun.
