Getting out of bed hack: Eat an apple

Written by Richard. Filed under food, health. 2 Comments.

I just can’t get out of bed in the morning. I hate it. I’ve tried having two alarms, tried putting my alarm on the other side of the room (I just end up getting back into bed) and setting my alarm an hour early and constantly hitting the snooze button until the last moment, but nothing has ever worked. Recently though I’ve found a simple way of getting myself into a state where jumping out of bed is easy: I eat an apple while in bed.

I had been feeling a bit sluggish in my morning workouts so wanted to increase my pre-workout carbs, but as I live close to the gym I wanted to ingest them as early as possible so as to not upset my stomach too much while exercising. I decided that an apple first thing suited the bill perfectly in terms of carbs and placed one on my alarm clock that evening so that I could just pick it up at the same time as turning off the alarm. Eating one in the darkness and while lying down was strange at first, but I found that afterwards getting out of bed was incredibly easy. And it’s been that way ever since. I’ve been doing this now for a few weeks and it has made such a difference compared to days where I don’t have to get up particularly early.

I think I may have found a new habit for life.

It’s Malaysia Week 2008 just round the corner from our offices. As such, I’ve been tasting the delightful food that Malaysia has to offer. Small bananas rock.

Fast Food Nation

I’ve been feeling pretty rough these past few days. A few people have been off work sick and I guess I’ve just caught it. So I took some R&R time from work in the evenings and watched “Fast Food Nation”. I suppose it’s nothing I didn’t already know deep down but the film pretty much kicks it all into the open. The exploited immigrant workers, the frustrated communities, the evil corporations and the disgusting food manufacturing process. I haven’t eaten fast food in a long long time so thankfully it didn’t turn my stomach as it probably would for those who do, but it’s still pretty gruesome. The final five minutes are especially horrifying when you get a real look at the process of a slaughterhouse.

It was an alright film but it’s one of the few that makes you feel empty inside. Not as in un-fulfilled empty, but that there’s nothing you can do to make this a better situation. I think only this film and “Elephant” have ever left me feeling this way. The final moments are wonderful and horrifying in a way. Thank God I already don’t eat Beef as if I did this film would be enough to put me off for good!

My new Bedtime Extreme Formula arrived from MyProtein this morning. It’s not the nicest tasting shake ever but if I want to get fit and healthy the sacrifices have to extend past the gym doors. Consistency is the key so I’ve just got to keep it up. So all together daily my suppliments and shakes consist of:

  • Multi-Vitamin with Ginseng and Probiotics
  • Omega 3-6-9 Cap
  • Whey Protein Isolate (NZ)
  • Whey Protein Isolate (EURO, Egg White Powder)
